The successful candidate will be responsible for the following deliverables to the data program:
- An accurate and authenticated inventory of all data sources and stores for the allocated data domain
- An accurate data map showing data lineage within the domain. This must be managed under version control and available for update with new discovery, or architectural change
- Logical modelling of data in the data domain
Catalogue of data dependencies across the operational landscape. This should show which systems, users or clients require data at what time and with what quality criteria. This should be a version controlled to allow for new discoveries and changes to architecture
A business analyst with strong experience and understanding of data usage across large corporate infrastructure. This role requires the candidate to identify stores of data in a particular domain (eg Client, Securities), and track it's consumption, sharing and management across the Gloibal AM organisation. This insight will be obtained through a range of skills including interviewing, system analysis and data investigation.
The candidate needs to be responsible for creating the data map for that domain, and be accountable for tracking lineage of data as it is created, modified, stored and manipulated through interconnecting systems and user interactions.
Custodianship of the data dictionary for the domain containing data elements and attributes found across the consolidated environment. This dictionary will support synonymous attributes in order to enable lookup or interpretation services to be built.
The role exists as part of a business led team to understanding current state data usage, and define requirements for the future state data platform and anticipated change demand.
The candidate must display the following capabilities:
- Ability to define a work plan and investigation strategy, and execute upon it to uncover the many usages and pathways for data in the organisation
- A diligent approach to documenting and representing discovered situations
- Selection of a suitable tool or process that supports updating and enhancement with new discoveries, or as architectural change alters the original output
- The ability to dissect data structures and storage mechanisms, enabling pro-active discovery rather than rely on the assistance or description of an IT expert
- An understanding of the use of data beyond the database. Consider data usage in messaging systems, transformation in end user applications and spreadsheets, and the extraction and consumption of flat files.
- Consider the temporal aspects of a global organisation. Understanding how the global clock can effect the relevance and appropriate of data, ensuring the non-functional requirements reflect business needs in relation to this
- Ability to work effectively across a globally distributed set of stakeholders
The candidate should have a good grounding in financial and technical aspects of data management:
- Financial
- A good working knowledge of the domain in which they are employed
- A strong grasp of industry standards and practices which shape data representation and usage in the domain
- A good understanding of data suppliers and sources within the domain
The ability to provide translation between business user and technical implementer
Technical
- Good understanding of relational modelling, allowing interpretation of data discovery to be done in a diagrammatic format
- Strong understanding of data types, both simple and complex, and how their use can effectively model and implement data structures
2015 represents a foundational year for the data programme. Whilst the technology challenge is significant, key focus is placed on the data governance process and the establishment of a Data Office. This function is driving a unified view of data based upon current needs, existing platforms and future requirements.
The governance approach divides the data universe into key data domains, those targeted in 2015 are listed below:
- Product - this is the holistic view of all offerings in the AM space, this includes funds, funds of funds, REITs and extends to advisory arrangements and consulting fees.
- Client - client (party) data is necessary to enable accurate reporting and administration, as well as enable cross-selling for the firm
- Securities - both listed and OTC security data across the traditional, hedge fund and alternative universes. This will be done, where possible, in partnership with the group wide GDS group.
- Benchmark - indexes, custom benchmarks and associated constituents (linked to Securities). This seeks a unified demand from the business and the drive to create a hybrid mastering solution leveraging best of breed providers and in-house value add
- AuM - as a tactical solution, leading to greater understanding of the domain, and enable key sales data to be gathered, this is preceded by a short term, pragmatic data gathering and distribution exercise which in turn leads to more formal governance of the data in domains such as Accounts, and Transactions & Holdings.
